The HSK 4 exam assesses the candidate’s proficiency in using the Chinese language, aligned with Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Candidates who pass HSK Level 4 can confidently discuss various topics in Chinese and engage in conversations with native speakers.
This exam is designed for those who have studied Chinese for 2-3 hours per week over four semesters (approximately two academic years) and have mastered 1,200 commonly used words along with relevant grammar. The HSK 4 exam consists of 100 tasks spread across three sections: Listening, Reading, and Writing, with a total duration of 105 minutes.
Listening Section:Part 1 contains 10 tasks. For each task, a speaker reads a text twice. A second speaker then reads a sentence related to the text, which is also provided in the test booklet. The candidate must judge if the sentence is correct.
Part 2 comprises 15 tasks. Candidates listen to a short dialogue (two exchanges) between two speakers, played twice. A third speaker asks a question, and the candidate selects the correct answer from four options.

Writing Section:Part 1 includes 10 tasks. In each task, several words are provided, and candidates must construct a sentence using those words.
Part 2 contains 5 tasks. Each task includes a picture and a word. Candidates must write a sentence based on the picture using the provided word.
Exam ScoringThe HSK 4 exam is scored across four categories: Listening, Reading, Writing, and a total score. A total score of 180 or higher is required to pass. The results are valid for an extended period and serve as official proof of language proficiency for admission to Chinese educational institutions. The results of the HSK oral exam are valid for two years from the test date.
